DESIGN TEAMS

12.15.2011

Introduction

Thank you for participating in our virtual jury!

Two teams of 6 students each have parametrically designed two free-standing temporary wall installations for NYIT's Old Wesbury campus.  The two sites are within the Library entry hallway of NYIT School of Architecture's Ed Hall.  The 30" deep wall proposals will stand in front of the South Facing glazing and flank the entry doors on either side, careful to avoid any path of travel and/or entry blocking issues.

This 4 week final project asked students to apply a full design workflow with parametric design (starting with freehand sketches, engaging in quantitative analysis, optimizing for defined parameters using grasshopper and ecotect, and preparing for fabrication with shop drawings and 1:1 construction detail mockups). Proposals take into account both laser cutter bed size and proposed material constraints.
  • You may click on the Team 1 and Team 2 labels above or scroll down to see each proposal.
  • Please scroll to the end of each the post and click on "comments" to add your critique in the text box that emerges.
  • You do not need a google account to post comments - you  may leave comments as an "anonymous user."  Please add your name at the end of your comment instead.
  • Please offer feedback not only on Design, but also issues of site, environmental performance, structural performance, constructabilty, and fabrication.
Based on your feedback, students will develop the proposals further and build the proposals over winter break.  We forward to sharing the installations with you in an exhibition opening at the start of the Spring semester.

A TAILORED FIT [Team 2 Submission]

A TAILORED FIT is a wall system made of RIBS and FINS.  The design of the RIBS is optimized for human scale seating scenarios. The sandwiched FINS are adjustable for three specific deployable winter states (9 AM, 12 Noon, 3 PM), optimizing for intended daylight conditions appropriate for functions at each time.
